Therefore, we have positioned ourselves at the top where our core competences lie.» Electrical Discharge Machining (EDM): In 1969, we bought our first electrical discharge machine, which has been the foundation for our most important core capability. EDM very soon proved to be one of the promising new key technologies in metalworking. We have continually expanded our experience in die sinking and wire EDM and, these days, count ourselves amongst the leading contract manufacturers for precise metal machining. It is not the ten machines that we productively utilise every day that are getting us further, but the very high standards of our customers for surface quality and precision forming. The advantages of EDM are: no mechanical stress to the metal piece, no limitations through hard metal grade or shape, high degree of machine autonomy, greater design possibilities at engineering level. Only an EDM-compatible design will profit from all EDM benefits – a piece of advice our customers will gladly follow. Tungsten carbide working: «It is the combination of knowledge of materials and knowledge of methods that form a basis for the skilled working of hard metal.» We have managed to form a solid base to work tungsten carbide parts efficiently by liaising intensively with the outstanding tungsten carbide manufacturer Metzger Ltd, Lotzwil/Switzerland, and by meeting the very high standards of our customers. We support our customers when it comes to choosing the right hard metal and the most suitable methods such as grinding and abrasion, polishing and extrude-honing and also provide the handling during and after the production process. Only perfectly manufactured hard metal parts will convince the customer to pay a higher unit price. Laser Machining: As with EDM, we decided early (1986) to go with this new key technology. We have been using the Nd:YAG pulsed laser (LASAG) for laser welding, cutting, drilling, marking and laser cladding. The high power pulse and high beam quality melt or vaporise nearly all known materials. Lasering is used to produce microstructures and to connect highly challenging geometrical shapes by conduction welding. The same rules apply as for EDM: only a laser-compatible design will be able to take advantage of all the benefits laser technology has to offer.

    C. Melchers & Co. was established on January 1, 1806 in Bremen, where the global company still maintains its headquarters to this very day. In the first few decades of the company’s history, over 30 ships sailed the oceans of the world under the Melchers flag, linking the ports of Europe, America and the Pacific. In the 1860s, C. Melchers & Co set up operations in Asia, where all its trading interests swiftly moved. At the same time, with the onset of steam ships, it abandoned its own shipping business to devote itself entirely to extending its trading operations. 1866 saw the establishment of the first branch in Hong Kong, in the wake of which China began to develop into a key lynchpin for the company’s business. The ensuing decades were a period of rapid growth for Melchers in China, with over 2,000 people employed at 12 branches and plants throughout the country. The First World War proved to be a setback for business relations, although business quickly recovered. It was not until the end of the Second World War in 1945 that business came to an almost complete halt. Even so, the company continued to survive, re-opening its first branches in Hong Kong, Singapore and Kuala Lumpur in the early fifties and gradually extending its branch network across Asia. Following the opening of the Chinese markets at the end of the seventies, Melchers set up branches here again, underscoring the significance of Chinese business for the company. With the establishment of a branch in San Francisco in the early eighties, the company also started to engage in US-Asian trade so as to gain a share of the rapidly growing trading relations between these two regions. Trade with China remains a key focus of the company’s overall business, comprising as it does imports of special natural products and finished goods on the one hand and exports of plant, machinery and supplies for the Asian industry on the other. The systems Pro-engineer and Catia, available to our staff, permit the creation of structural components and tools, "in one casting" as it were. Injection Moulds Our staff in the individual manufacturing areas have state-of-the-art technologies and most up-to-date machines (such as 12-wire and 15-wire cavity sinking EDM machines) at their disposal. In producing moulds with a guaranteed number of shots, especially for the automobile industry and consumer electronics, our dictum is precision and quality. This holds true for injection moulds, diecasting, duroplastic, two-component, rotating, transfer and insert/outsert moulds, just as much as it does for two-colour moulds, combinations of hard and soft plastics, automatic wire leads, in-mould decoration, and precision gear wheels. Rapid tooling with the aid of our EOS metal sintering machine M250 Extended makes it possible to produce mould inserts for injection moulds and prototype tools within a very short time. Eighty moulding machines in Vienna and Hungary, with a clamping force of between 25 and 1,100 tons, offer all the possibilities of manufacturing moulded, thermosetting and duroplast, gas-injection moulded, two-component moulded, insert and outsert moulded, as well as in-mould decoration parts. Our machines are equipped with automatic robot systems, and automatic packaging lines complement the production line. Vienna: 3-shift operation / technical products and precision parts with a mould clamping force of up to 500 tons, Hungary: 4-shift operation / technical products and design parts with a mould clamping force of up to 1,100 tons. Your plastic parts are coated in three fully automated painting lines on a water-soluble basis (single-component or two-component coating).
